Autistic children aged 11–13 and a parent or legal guardian are invited to take part in a research study using a virtual reality pedestrian simulator.

Thank-you payment: £60 cash per child–caregiver pair

What is the study about?

We are exploring how children, make road-crossing decisions in immersive, realistic virtual environments. The findings will help improve future road safety design for children, including neurodivergent children.

Who can take part?

  • Children aged 11–13
  • Children with a formal diagnosis of autism
  • One parent or legal guardian who can attend and also take part

To take part, children should:

  • understand and follow simple instructions
  • communicate verbally
  • walk without mobility aids
  • have normal or corrected-to-normal vision
  • not normally wear glasses
  • not have a co-occurring learning disability

What does taking part involve?

  • One visit to the University of Leeds
  • About 75–90 minutes
  • Road-crossing tasks in a virtual reality pedestrian simulator
  • Eye and head tracking, brief questionnaires
