  1. About Autism

Just been diagnosed?

Being diagnosed with autism can bring up many different emotions. Some people may feel anxious about what the future may hold – others may feel relieved that they finally have a better understanding of themselves.

It can be an amazing time, and a stressful time; there is no limit to the range of emotions people can experience. Who should I tell? How will people react? Am I still the person I was before? Will people treat me differently? There is no right or wrong way to feel - we are all unique!

Autism can also affect the family and friends of people who are diagnosed, which can bring many challenges in itself.

You can get in touch with us if you need help or advice about autism, for yourself or someone you know.

We also provide specialist 1:1 support for autistic adults through our Vocational and Community Services (VACS).

People use VACS for all sorts of reasons: leisure activities, help with health, learning new skills, help with communication, emotional or practical support, help with behaviour management, getting out, meeting people...whatever your goals in life, we'll try to support you to reach them.

About VACS

Finding Help

Leeds Autism AIM (Advice, Information and Mentoring) have some great advice for newly diagnosed adults who receive little or no funded support.

You can also visit our Information, Links & Resources page to be directed to the most appropriate service, whether you need support with housing, accessing services, employment, mental health and more.

If you feel you may need additional support following your diagnosis, you might be eligible for funding towards the costs of your support. To find out if you can get funding towards care or support, you will need a social worker or care manager will need to carry out a 'care needs assessment'. If you live in the Leeds area, you can find out more about getting the assessment here.
